Questions

Why Choose Hardtwood Tabletops?

A table top carries every dinner, deadline, and card game in the house, so we build ours from hand-picked solid hardwood, sized to fractional inches and reinforced to stay flat for decades. Choose face grain for flowing cathedral figure or live edge for a one-of-a-kind slab silhouette, on tops for dining tables, desks, conference tables, and restaurant floors.

Price your exact size live in the Builder, with free nationwide freight and a 100% VOC-free finish that is safe for homes and commercial spaces alike.

What is the lead time for a custom tabletop?
Our standard lead time for custom tabletops is 3–4 weeks, depending on wood species, size, and current production volume. Every tabletop is built to order, fully finished, and inspected before shipping. Larger commercial or restaurant projects may require a slightly longer window, but we’ll always provide an accurate estimate up front.
Do your tabletops come with bases or legs included?
No, tabletops are sold as standalone tops by default. However, if you need legs or a custom base, we can supply or craft one. Just contact us with photos, inspiration images, or a sketch of what you’re looking for. We can fabricate metal or wood bases to match the exact size, style, and load requirements of your tabletop.
Can I order a tabletop in exact custom dimensions?
Absolutely. Every tabletop is made to order, so you can specify exact length, width, thickness, corner radius, and edge profile. We precision-mill everything in-house for an exact fit to your space or base.
Do your tabletops include C-channel reinforcement for stability?
Yes, C-channel steel reinforcement is available and recommended for larger tabletops or heavy-use environments. Channels are installed flush into the underside of the top to prevent long-term movement while keeping the design completely hidden.
What is the best wood species for a custom dining tabletop?
Walnut and White Oak are the most popular choices for dining tables because they balance durability, beauty, and long-term stability. Maple, Cherry, and Mahogany are also excellent options depending on the style you’re targeting. Red Oak and Knotty Alder provide strong value at a more budget-friendly price. Compare every wood side by side in our species guide.
How thick should a solid wood tabletop be for dining, desks, or restaurants?
For most dining tables and desks, 1.5 to 2 inches is the ideal range. For heavy-use restaurant environments, 1.5 inches provides the best balance of durability, weight, and cost. Larger statement pieces, conference tables, or commercial builds often use 2 inches or thicker for a more substantial look.
What edge profiles do you offer for hardwood tabletops?
We offer a full selection of edge profiles including: • Straight/Square • Eased • Beveled • Roundover • Ogee • Custom requests Each edge is milled cleanly for a smooth, modern finish or a more traditional, detailed look depending on your project.
Is solid wood better than veneer for dining tables?
Yes. Solid hardwood offers superior strength, longevity, and refinishability compared to veneer. Veneer can chip, delaminate, or wear through, while a solid wood tabletop can last decades and be resurfaced multiple times. If you want a long-term investment piece, solid wood is the best choice.
What size tabletop do I need for seating 4, 6, or 8 people?
Here are the most common seating guidelines: • 4 people: 36"–48" long × 30"–36" wide • 6 people: 60"–72" long × 36"–40" wide • 8 people: 84"–96" long × 40"–42" wide Round tables follow similar rules: • 4 people: 42"–48" diameter • 6 people: 54"–60" diameter • 8 people: 72" diameter We can build any size you need — plan roughly 24 inches of table length per seat.
Are hardwood tabletops durable enough for restaurants and hospitality use?
Yes, when properly finished, hardwood tabletops are extremely durable in restaurant and hospitality environments. Our commercial tabletops use high-performance hardwax oil finishes that resist moisture, stains, and abrasion while maintaining a natural look. Many restaurants choose Walnut, White Oak, or Red Oak for their combination of durability and aesthetics.
Do you make round, square, or custom-shaped tabletops?
Yes, we build round, square, rectangular, oval, racetrack, and fully custom-shaped hardwood tabletops. Using CNC precision cutting, we can create unique shapes for dining rooms, offices, restaurants, and commercial spaces. Custom edge profiles, radius corners, and specialty geometry are all available.
Do you take on custom or one-off projects?
Yes. Beyond the online builder, we take on custom sizes, oversized pieces, matched commercial runs, and bespoke solid-hardwood millwork. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll quote it by hand, usually within one business day. Start a custom project ›
