Live Edge, Kept Honest
The tree’s own line, kept as the front edge of a shelf, a countertop, or a table top. Solid hardwood — walnut above all — kiln-dried, flattened, sealed in food-safe zero-VOC hardwax oil, and cut to your size to the quarter inch, with the natural edge on one side or both.

The Walnut Three
Where walnut live edge lives
Dark heartwood, a pale sap line, and a curve no two slabs repeat — walnut is the live edge wood, and these are the three ways we build it.
The Real Thing
What a live edge should be
A Hardtwood live edge
- ✓Solid hardwood, the edge grown by the tree or sculpted by hand in our shop — no two alike
- ✓Kiln-dried and flattened, so it stays flat in a heated home
- ✓Bark removed, edge sanded and sealed — nothing to flake
- ✓Voids and checks stabilized before finishing

Questions
Live Edge FAQ
What does "live edge" actually mean?
The front edge of the piece keeps an organic, flowing line instead of being ripped straight — the tree’s own waney edge where the slab allows it, or an edge our shop sculpts by hand to the same character. Either way no two curves repeat, and the rest of the piece is milled, flattened, and finished like any of our work.
Is the bark left on?
No. Bark eventually releases, so we remove it, then sand and seal the natural edge itself. You keep the organic line and the texture without anything that can flake off.
Is live edge harder to keep clean?
Not meaningfully. The edge is sealed with the same zero-VOC hardwax oil as the top surface, so it wipes down the same way. On kitchen counters we ease any sharp points on the edge during finishing.
Can I get an exact size if the edge is natural?
Yes — length, depth at the straight side, and thickness are all cut to the quarter inch. The live edge side varies along its curve by nature; we confirm the depth range with you before milling.
Which wood is best for live edge?
Walnut is the classic — dark heartwood, pale sap line, dramatic curve — and it’s our most-ordered live edge wood by far. White oak and cherry follow. Every one of our live edge species is solid hardwood, never a veneer.
What is the current lead time?
Every live edge piece is milled to order in our New York shop. Current lead time is 10–12 weeks, and every piece ships crated, nationwide.
Do you take on custom or one-off projects?
Yes. Beyond the online builder, we take on custom sizes, oversized pieces, matched commercial runs, and bespoke solid-hardwood millwork. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll quote it by hand, usually within one business day. Start a custom project ›
