Restaurant Table Top Sizes: The Working Cheat Sheet
Table sizes decide your cover count, and cover count decides your revenue — so this is operations math, not decor. These are the footprints we build most for restaurants, and the spacing rules that keep a dining room workable in real service.
The standards
- Two-top: 24″ × 24″ tight-service café; 24″ × 30″ the comfortable standard; 30″ × 30″ where plates run large.
- Four-top: 30″ × 48″ the workhorse; 36″ × 36″ square for casual rooms. Two 24″ × 30″ two-tops pushed together also make a four — the flexible-floor play.
- Rounds: 30–36″ seats two to three; 42–48″ four comfortably; 54–60″ six. Rounds soften a room and handle odd party sizes — the full math is in our round table guide.
- Banquette runs: 24–30″ deep, length to the wall — built as continuous runs or seamed sections to your drawing.
- Communal: 30–40″ wide, 96–144″ long; over 8 feet we spec hidden steel C-channel and, where doorways demand, a seamed two-piece build.
- Bar tops: 18–25″ deep, any length; 8–12″ knee overhang for seating, C-channel under it (the bar top guide).
The spacing math
Allow roughly 24″ of table edge per diner, 18″ minimum between occupied chair backs, and 36″ for service aisles (48″ on main runs). A room that seats four more covers on paper but can't be bussed is a slower room — count the aisles before the tables.
Thickness: the service answer
1.5″ is the commercial standard — substantial enough to survive years of bussing and leaning, light enough for staff to lift onto bases. 1.75″ reads more premium on statement tables; past 2″ you're making furniture, not turning covers.
Ordering the run
Every size above is a starting point, not a limit — we mill to the inch, grain-match multi-table runs from one lumber lot, and deliver direct to site around your GC (the full playbook: ordering for an opening). Trade accounts get tiered pricing on the whole package — apply here, then send the floor plan, or price a single top now.
