By Room

Where they carry their weight

Kitchen floating shelves

Open shelving that holds real dishware — 10–12″ deep and 8/4 thick, sealed food-safe. Steam and splash are what the hardwax oil is for.

Living room & media walls

Long spans grain-matched in a single run, alcoves and asymmetric layouts cut to the quarter inch. Floating wood shelves that read as architecture, not hardware.

Book shelves & office

The 300 lb rating is the point — a 36″ shelf of hardcovers is about 60 lb. Depths from 8″ keep spines flush with the front edge.

Why Solid

Solid hardwood vs. big-box “wood”

A Hardtwood shelf

  • One solid board — sand and refinish it for decades
  • Rated hardware, channels routed to fit
  • Your wall's exact length, to the quarter inch
  • 15 species, live edge available, any stain

A big-box floating shelf

  • Veneer over MDF, or a hollow torsion box
  • 25–50 lb ratings on drywall anchors
  • Fixed lengths with visible end caps
  • “Walnut finish,” not walnut
Questions

Floating Shelf FAQ

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?
Ours are load-tested to 300 lb. Every shelf ships on the concealed Hovr bracket system — an aircraft-grade aluminum plate with steel rods that lag into studs, brick, or masonry. That is a shelf of cast-iron cookware or a full run of hardcovers, not just picture frames.
Do floating shelves work in kitchens?
Yes — open kitchen shelving is our most common install. Go 10–12 inches deep and 1.75–2 inches thick for dishware, and the food-safe zero-VOC hardwax oil finish shrugs off steam and splashes. Re-oil once a year in heavy-use spots.
Can I order an exact custom size?
That is the whole shop: length, depth, and thickness to the quarter inch, in any of our 15 hardwoods, priced instantly in the Builder — no quote round-trip.
How do the shelves install?
Two steps: lag the bracket plate level into your wall, then slide the shelf onto the rods. The channels are CNC-routed into your exact shelf in our shop, so there is nothing to align on site and no visible hardware from any angle.
Are these solid wood or veneer?
Solid, always — one thick hardwood board, never veneer over MDF or a hollow torsion box. A solid shelf can be sanded and refinished for decades, and it is why the 300 lb rating is honest.
What is the current lead time?
Every shelf is milled to order in our New York shop. Current lead time is "10–12 weeks", and every piece ships crated, nationwide.
Do you take on custom or one-off projects?
Yes. Beyond the online builder, we take on custom sizes, oversized pieces, matched commercial runs, and bespoke solid-hardwood millwork. Tell us what you have in mind and we’ll quote it by hand, usually within one business day. Start a custom project ›
